Dry Age Related Macular Degeneration
The main cause of visual loss in dry macular degeneration is generalized atrophy of macular area which mainly involves the photoreceptors and RPEs. There will be gradual breakdown of these cells in the macula, resulting in a gradual blurring of central vision.
As we said this form is slowly progressed and it accounts for 80% of cases. The main finding we will see during eye examination is the presence of Drusens.
This Type can be divided into three forms:
Early: small Drusens and no symptoms
Intermediate: medium-sized Drusens and mild blurred in vision.
Severe form: This is called geographical atrophy. There are large and soft drusens and severe loss of vision with difficulties in reading.
Age-related macular degeneration occur bilaterally or in both eyes but one eye is affected more than the other.
That is why when you use both your eyes u can not feel any abnormalities in vision even if one eye is affected by AMD. But if you cover the good eye you will notice the difficulties.
