Diagnosis of Wet Age Related Macular Degeneration

Diagnosis of Wet Age Related Macular Degeneration

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Wet Age Related Macular Degeneration

1- Painless blurring of central vision which is rapid onset often within days of painless blurring of central vision.

2- Metamorphopsia . The images look distorted.

3- Choroidal Neovascularization looks like a green-red lesion under the retina and it can be associated with:

  • Retinal hemorrhages which can be under the retina or intra retinal hemorrhage and sometimes vitreous hemorrhage can occur.
  • Lipid depositions under the retina or intraretinal deposition. This lipid is called exudates and it represents chronic leakage of fluid and lipid from these abnormal blood vessels. This exudates can accumulate under the retina and cause exudative retinal detachment.
  • Fibrosis that is formed under the retina and it is called disciform scar.

What are the types of Wet macular degeneration according to its appearance under Fluorescein Angiography

Classic Choroidal Neovascularization (CNV)

It is a well-defined vascular membrane which appears as a well defined lesion. This type also can be classified according to its location from the fovea.

  • Extrafoveal: The CNV is 200–1500 µm away from the centre of the fovea.
  • Juxtafoveal; 1–200 µm from the fovea.
  • Subfoveal .Located under the fovea.

Occult CNV

CNV has no defined margin on Fluorescein angiography.
