AcrySof IQ Intraocular Lens

AcrySof IQ Intraocular Lens is a special aspheric intraocular lens that is used to replace the cataract lens

AcrySof IQ Intraocular Lens

AcrySof IQ intraocular lenses are the most common implanted lenses in the world. Since their introduction in the early 1990s, more than 35 million lenses were implanted. Alcon's AcrySof IQ intraocular lenses offer patients a variety of benefits that give them a full range of quality vision.

Spherical Aberration

Spherical aberration is a type of optical aberration or optical refraction error. Normally there are two spherical aberrations occur by the eye, the first one from the cornea and it is a positive spherical aberration that is balanced by a negative spherical aberration that is occurred by the natural crystalline lens. Balanced negative and positive aberrations help to bring light rays into a single, ideal focal point, resulting in clear vision.

With age, the natural crystalline lens get thicker and rounder and these changes will change the lens from negative spherical aberration tool to positive spherical aberration. Vision will get deteriorated with time due to increase in the net positive spherical aberration of the eye.

Symptoms of increased spherical aberration are:

• Glare and halos around light.

• Blurry vision.

• Double vision and multiple images.

• Loss of contrast. Low contrast sensitivity may impair:

  1. Seeing traffic lights or cars at night.
  2. Noticing spots, or dirt on clothes, counters, or dishes.
  3. Understanding facial gestures and subtleties of expression.

• Poor night vision.

AcrySof IQ Intraocular Lens

It is a special aspheric intraocular lens that is used to replace the natural cloudy lens in cataract surgery. This lens can improve the contrast sensitivity and the visual performance of the patient by providing negative spherical aberration that can balance the positive spherical aberration of the cornea.

Traditional Intraocular lens implantation will provide positive aberration that will be added to the positive aberration of the cornea.

Advantages of the AcrySof IOL

1- Reduce the spherical aberration of the eye.

2- This intraocular lens remains stable and centered once implanted inside the eye because it is designed to have the lens capsule shrink around its haptics.

3- The yellow color of the lens that is almost the same as the natural discoloration of a healthy adult crystalline lens. This yellow discoloration helps to improve the contrast sensitivity and night vision with the reduction of glare and halos around light.

4- UV and blue light-filtering chromophores. Most available intraocular lenses filter UV light only. Overexposure to blue light may be harmful to the retina and may increase the risk of ocular melanoma and contribute to the development of macular degeneration. The blue light protection is provided by the light yellow color of the lens.

Poor candidates AcrySof IQ Intraocular Lens

1- Rupture of the lens capsule or bag because the lens could be decentered or tilted.

2- Patients with high negative spherical aberration in their cornea such as patients with keratoconus and patients with previous hyperopic refractive surgery. This can be tested with corneal topography.

3- Cataract surgery cost is higher with aspheric IOLs than traditional of IOLs.
