Prevention of Age Related Macular Degeneration
The first line in treatment of Age Related Macular Degeneration
is prevention.In order to prevent macular degeneration, there are certain measures that you can do. Also these measures can help you to reduce down the diseases.
These measurements are:
1- Eat healthy food. Healthy food especially diet rich in green leaf vegetables, are rich in antioxidants which will fight against the free radicals which are normally produced in our body with metabolism. The main known antioxidants are vitamins A,C and E.
Other types of antioxidants that might be helpful for your eye are lutein, zeaxanthin and Omega 3 Fatty Acids. There are multiple clinical trials these days on those three antioxidants and their role in preventing or reducing the incidence of macular degeneration.
Omega 3 fatty acid is found in high concentration in fish while lutein and zeaxanthin are found mainly in eggs and spinach.
2- Stop smoking. One single factor that can help you to reduce the incidence of macular degeneration is stop smoking. Smoking is not only associated with worse prognosis of macular degeneration, it will also prevent you from having full complements of vitamins.
3- Exercise regularly can help to reduce to incidence and slow down the diseases.
4- Regular eye exam. If you are above 40, you should have regular diluted fundus exam to detect the disease early and start on treatments.
