Correlation between alzheimer dementia and peripheral retinal examination

 

 

A study was conducted by by Dr. Tunde Peto, Moorfield’s Eye Hospital, London, Dr Craig Ritchie, West London Mental Health NHS Trust, London, & Dr Imre Lengyel, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, London on 102 patients in which 56 patients were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Dementia (AD) and the rest,46 patients were the control group. All of them had Images of the peripheral retina through Optomap fundus Camera. This fundus camera provides ultra-widefield view of the peripheral part of the retina.

The main purpose of this study was to determine if they can detect and monitor the progress of alzheimer Disease through simple eye exam. They found that Patients with Alzheimer Dementia can be associated with small hard drusens at the periphery of the retina.
