Symptoms of Keratoconus

Symptoms of keratoconus can range from asymptomatic with no symptoms at all to severe blurred vision. Sometimes, keratoconus can be diagnosed only when the patient decided to do lasik or other types refractive surgery.

Before any refractive surgery, corneal topography will be ordered and it will show that the patient has subclinical keratoconus.

What are the Symptoms of Keratoconus:

1- Normally with regular shaped cornea, the lights will be focused on a single point at the back of the eye but in keratoconus and because of abnormal irregular conical shape of the cornea, the lights will be focused in several points at the back of the eye causing blurred vision with multiple images. The refractive errors of patient with keratoconus will be myopia with irregular astigmatism.

2- Sensitivity to light or photophobia.

3- Glare and halos around lights which are mainly due to irregular astigmatism.

4- Double vision in which in keratoconus is called monocular diplopia because diplopia or double vision persist when one eye is covered.

5- In case the predisposing factors of keratoconus is allergic disorders, the patient will complain of itching, watery eye and eye redness.

6- Sometimes, in progressive severe keratoconus there will be rupture in the posterior surface of the cornea.

The aqueous humor which normally presents behind the cornea will have access through this wound and diffuse within and between the corneal tissues causing the cornea to swell. This is called Acute corneal hydrops.

Corneal Hydrops is an acute condition which can cause sever deterioration of vision and also can cause severe eye pain, photophobia and tearing. After acute corneal hydrops healed, it can cause corneal scar which appears as a white tissue on the cornea.
