Ophthalmology Terminology T​

 

 

Tarsorrhaphy. A surgical procedure in which the palpebral fissure (the opening between the eyelids) is narrowed by surgically sewn the upper and the lower eyelid together. The main indication of it is to protect the cornea in severe dry eyes.

Tensilon Test. A test that can be done for the diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis which is characterized by progressive weakness of the muscles during the day.. A short-acting anticholinesterase(edrophonium chloride) medication is given through the vein. A positive result is indicated by improvement in the muscle strength.

Terrien’s Marginal Degeneration. Type of corneal degeneration which is characterized by idiopathic peripheral corneal thinning which usually starts in the superior part and can spread circumferentially.Mostly it occurs in middle aged male and in both eyes although it can be asymmetrically.The eye is painless and not inflamed.It can be associated with corneal perforation.

Thyroid Eye Disease. Ocular changes that occur in patient with thyroid gland problems, mainly hyperthyroidism or Graves' disease. Ocular changes can occur in cornea,conjunctiva, extraocular muscles, optic nerve and orbital contents.

Titmus Test. Type of stereopsis tests that consists of two plates in the form of a booklet. It has three components which are fly, circle and animal.It needs Polaroid glasses.

TNO Random Dot Tests. type of stereopsis tests that consists of 7 plates with various obvious and hidden shapes in red and green dots.It needs red green glasses.

 

 

Tobacco Dust. Pigmented cells that can be seen in the anterior part of the vitreous. It represents retinal tears or retinal hole.

Tolosa Hunt Syndrome. Inflammatory condition of the cavernous sinus and/or the superior orbital fissure. This condition leads to painful restriction of extraocular muscles movements.

Tonometry. A procedure by which intraocular pressure is measured.

Toxocariasis. Infection that is caused by intestinal ascarid (roundworm) of dogs called Toxocara canis.It has ocular and systemic manifestations.

Toxoplasmosis. Infection by intracellular protozoan called Toxoplasma Gondii.It has also ocular and systemic manifestation.

Trabectome

Trabecular Meshwork. Pigmented tissue which is located at the angle of the eye. Aqueous humor is drained through it to Canals of Schlemm.

Trabeculectomy

Trabeculodialysis. A surgical procedure which is usually done for children with inflammatory glaucoma.The upper edge of trabecular meshwork is cut through a knife. The trabecular meshwork is then disinserted from its insertion or attachment to scleral spur.

Trabeculotomy. A surgical procedure that is done for patients with congenital glaucoma in which part of the trabecular meshwork is removed by a trabeculotome.

 

 

Trachoma. Chronic conjunctival infection caused by chlamydia trachomatis.

Tractional Retinal Detachment. Type of retinal detachment that occurs due to traction from abnormal fibrous of fibro-vascular membrane. This abnormal membrane is formed and attached to the retina and when it contracted it will pull the retina which will cause detachment. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy is one of the common causes of it.

Transition Lenses. Are types of Photochromic lenses which are clear lenses that become tinted when hit by UV light. The shade of the tint depends on the amount of UV present.

Traumatic Cataract

Traumatic Glaucoma. Type of glaucoma that occurs after trauma to the eye.

Traumatic Optic Neuropathy. Optic nerve dysfunction that occurs due to trauma to the head or the eye globe.

Trichiasis. Abnormal misdirection of the eyelashes which grow directly backward towards the cornea. It causes corneal erosions and in severe case can cause corneal ulceration.

Trichotillomania. Psychiatric disorder of hair removal.
