Hi,

I am recently diagnosed with macular edema. What is the difference between macular degeneration and macular edema?

I am sorry to hear that. Macular edema is a condition in which fluids are accumulated in retinal layers and the thickness of retina increases.

By OCT ,the normal thickness of retinal is around 150 Microns while in macular edema it can reach to 600 microns. There are many causes of macular edema such as diabetic retinopathy and central retinal vein occlusion.

In macular degeneration,there is no accumulation of fluid but there is degeneration and loss of retinal cells and by OCT, the retina is thinner than normal.

Whats the difference between retinal edema and macular edema?

And can retinal edema be treated and cured.

Macula is part of the retina so macular edema is part of retinal edema. Macula is the central area of the macula that is responsible for central vision.

we have to find the cause od edema to treat it. most of the causes of macular edema is treatable.
