Hi,

I am 40 yrs old/ male with Diabetes Mellitus and diagnosed with fluid in retina.

I was instructed by my eye doctor to have Avastin intraocular injection for macular edema. I am worried about the injection and want to know if its use is legal?

Avastin which is also called Bevacizumab is used to treat diabetic retinopathy. Avastin is giving through intraocular injection. Avastin is an anti-VEGF medication in which it blocks the activity of VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor).

VEGF is secreted by damaged retinal cells and it causes leakage of fluid and lipid from retinal blood vessels and also it stimulates the formation of abnormal blood vessels which are fragile and bleed easy.

By blocking the actions of VEGF, Avastin stops the accumulation of fluid in retinal layers and also block the formation of new blood vessels.

It is not approved by FDA as intraocular injection and it is used as off the table in many countries such as USA as a treatment for diabetic retinopathy and Wet Age Related Macular Degeneration. There are many studies compare the effects and side effects of Avastin Vs Lucentis for the treatment of Retinal Diseases
