Question

Hi,

I really hope someone can answer a few of my questions. On Friday my fiancee had the Photorefractive Keratoplasty surgery for both of his eyes.

We saw his eye doctor yesterday for his post operation follow up. Everything went well except he forgot to give me his emergency phone number and when I need some simple questions answered i can not contact him.

My Fiance is having cold like symptoms and I'm wondering if i can give him anything for the symptoms. He is having a stuffy nose and watery eyes, but when his nose is stuffy its causing severe pain and they told me to just give him ibuprofen for the pain and it does not seem to be working.

I have some left over hydrocodone from a injury I had. Can I give him one or at least half of one. My concern is with that will it dry out his eyes too much since it dehydrates the body.

His eyes drops are, Bromday Eye Drops ( one drop per eye per day), Pred Forte eye drops and Zymaxid (both of those are one drop per eye 4 times a day) and his eye doctor recommended his lubricating eye drops were are using non prescription preservative free Refresh Plus.

Also what I'm wondering if I can give him is Rexall allergy relief the active ingredient is Diphenhydramine HCI 25mg. Thanks in advance for any answers :)

I have also been keeping an ice pack on his eyes for the majority of the day today.

Answer

Thanks for your Question

Hydrocodone is actually used as a pain relief in patients who had Photorefractive Keratoplasty. Both Hydrocodone and Diphenhydramine can cause dryness of the eye but you can treat this dryness by increasing the frequency of Refresh Tears.

You can also use vitamin C which is very helpful for his cold condition and also it speeds up the healing process of the eye after Photorefractive Keratoplasty.

Comment...thanks and another question By Tonya Thank you for the answer!

It helped greatly! Everything is going great now he had his bandage contacts removed Wednesday and his sight is getting better everyday, its absolutely amazing!

I'm very impressed with the results and the doctor says with the (prk) his eyes will keep improving over the next couple months, only problem is he's having halos at night when he sees the lights. I really do hope that goes away.

One other question to all who have had or knows someone who has had the photo refractive keratoplasty surgery performed in long term how fragile are your eyes. This is to put my mind at ease. See were farmers and were always out in the dust and around cattle and rough ourselves up a lot we are also on the fire dept.

How fragile are you eyes now and how sensitive are they? After healed are they like mine? (untouched) or will he spend the rest of his life being very careful he seems to think he will be just fine and can continue on just like normal in a few months me on the other hand I have major doubts.

Thanks for all replies in advance!
