Question

Hi,

I found my 9 year old daughter looking into an microwave oven while it was operating. Her face was about ten inches from the window.

Upon questioning, she said that she had done so a number of times before. Recently she had a routine eye exam and the doctor said she had a cataract.

Is there a connection between the microwave incident and the cataracts?

Thanks

Thanks for your question

Cataract means opacification of the natural human lens. It has been reported that chronic exposure to low power microwave radiation can affect the transparency of natural lens because these radiations can affect the biological and biochemical functions of lens's epithelial cells which are responsible for keeping the lens clear.

Lenses with damaged epithelial cells can form opacification which leads to formation of radiation cataract. Still further studies needed to find the impact of this radiation on human lens.
