Hi,
I want to get an idea of whether Systane is an effective way to deal with Fuchs' dystrophy. I usually use a generic form of Muro 128, but it stings my eyes quite a bit. An eye doctor suggested Systane, which doesn't sting.

The question is whether Systane is as effective as Muro 128 in dealing with Fuchs' dystrophy, hoping to keep the condition reasonably under control and possibly postponing the need for surgery somewhat. Any thoughts?

Fuchs endothelial dystrophy is a disease of the endothelial layer of the cornea. Endothelial layer is the inner layer of the cornea. This layer is responsible for pumping extra fluid outside the cornea. Any defect in this layer causes the fluid to accumulate in the cornea and leads to corneal edema.

Mura 128 is Sodium Chloride Hypertonicity Ophthalmic Ointment. It acts like hypertonic salts that absorbs water and fluid from the cornea. Common side effect of this ointment is burning and stinging sensation and dry eyes.

Systane eye drops can be used to treat dry eyes caused by muro 128 but it is not useful to treat corneal edema in patients with fuchs endothelial dystropy.
