Question

Hi,

After my right eye cataract surgery,I was wheeled into the waiting room to wait for the Dr . To check me. I started to get increasing right side head ,neck and ear pain.I was crying so I asked my husband to go to the desk and ask them to send someone to help me.

An assistant came and wheeled me into a patient room and told me that the Dr. would be in to see me in a few minutes. The Dr. Came in and checked my eye pressure,it was 36. The Dr. Said he thought that it might have been higher than that.

(I have Glaucoma) The Dr. Took an instrument and said that he was going to burp my eye.The pressure in my head immediately stopped and I felt the pain gone.Three months ago I had my left cataract done and my eye pressure went up to 37 but I did not have the head pain as I did when I had the right cataract done.

I was given 3 capsules 500 mg. each of Diamox to take to help lower the eye pressure,I took one right after the surgery, one that night and one in the morning. Eye drops were,Bromday 1x day,Zymaxid 4x day,Prednisolone. 4xday, Combigan 2x day and Lumigan 1 drop in both eyes at bedtime.Take Tylenol for headache.

Why did I get pain the first time but not the second time? The left eye also was burped.

Thanks for your Question

High intraocular pressure after cataract surgery is common complication and most of the time it is temporary condition that last for few days to couple of weeks.

Eye drops for glaucoma can be used to reduce the intraocular pressure but sometimes oral medications such as Diamox can also be used if the intraocular pressure is more than 30 mmHg.

Symptoms of increase intraocular pressure after cataract surgery are eye pain that radiate to the head and neck and sometimes can be associated with nausea and vomiting. These symptoms present in most of these patients but not always.

Some people with pressure at 25 mmHg can have these symptoms but others at pressure 40 mmHg and above can have these symptoms.

Also in the same patient, one eye can have them while the another eye has no pain.So far there isn't any scientific explanation.
