Hello Dr,

My son is 5 years old and he has recently developed double vision with intermittent esotropia which is not all the time. Child is healthy, specialist check the eyes from the back too, eyes are healthy.

The specialist says he need botox injection because eyes muscles are weak but on the other hand the optician says he need glasses because he is short sighted. 

Please help. I  am confused.

There are many factors will determine the treatment of intermittent esotropia such as visual acuity, the presence of amblyopia, degree of esotropia, esotropia appears in far or near distance or both, is there any restrictions or paralysis of ocular muscles and many other factors but most of the time, the first line of treatment is eyeglasses.

In order to get the exact power of the eyeglasses, cycloplegic eye drops should be used. These eye drops relax certain muscles inside the eye and help the optometrist to find the exact power of the eye.

Regular follow up is also very important after wearing glasses.

You should always ask for second opinion from pediatric ophthalmologist
