Question

Hi,

I had cataract surgery in my right eye on October 14 2013 at the Royal Free.

I was seen 4 to 5 weeks after surgery & Intraocular pressure was 21. I was prescribed Maxidepasone(?) which I used from 22 November to 5th December & Intraocular pressure had risen to 31.

The drops were discontinued & no alternative was prescribed. At the flow up on January 9th Intraocular pressure was still 31. Lotemax 4 times a day was prescribed along with Cosopt & Zalatan which I take already for glaucoma prevention.

I am due to see the ophthalmologist in 2 weeks time. My sight is good & I do not have pain. RFH is well aware of my tendency to glaucoma as I am tested twice a year.

I am less than satisfied with my treatment (or lack of it)!

Thanks

Answer

Thanks for your Question

Sometimes glaucoma or high intraocular pressure can be induced by cataract and this kind of glaucoma can be either angle closure glaucoma or a combination of angle closure with open angle glaucoma.

After cataract surgery, the intraocular pressure will drop to normal range in case of angle closure glaucoma or combined closure and open glaucoma but in cases with pure open angle glaucoma the intraocular pressure will stay on the range as before the surgery.

You have to keep using the antiglaucoma eye drops and there are many treatment options for open angle glaucoma such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, iStent, trabectome and canaloplasty.
