Cataract surgery on 1 eye two days ago
Pre/Post surgery eye drops only
I wear framed eyeglass lenses
Question
Hi,
Two days ago I had cataract surgery on one eye. I am taking three pre/post eye drops now. Developed a shortness of breath; my surgeon recommended stopping two of the three (Besivance and Prolensa). This seemed to help.
I believe I may have accentuated the absorption of the eye drops into my blood stream by lying down for 10 minutes after using the drops.
Question: how risky is it to stop taking the remaining two eye drops?
Thanks
Answer
Thanks for your Question
Besivance is besifloxacin ophthalmic suspension which is anti bacterial eye drops while Prolensa is bromfenac ophthalmic solution which is NSAIDs. Most likely you had shortness of breath from it.
Eye drops can have access to blood stream from nasolacrimal duct and you can minimize this by apply gentle pressure with your finger at the inner corner of the eye to prevent the drain of the eye drop through nasolacrimal duct to throat.
You should not stop taking the other two drops. Post cataract surgery eye drops are very important to prevent inflammation and infection after the surgery and you should continue using them for at least 4 weeks post surgery and with the recommendation of your surgeon
