Question

Hi,

This question is for my 7 years old son. he has prescription from Dec 2018 (that the first time we come to know). His number was Sphere (-1.5) and Cyl (-2.0) for both eyes and he started wearing glasses (full time). After three months the pre goes up to Sphere (-2.0) and Cyl (-2.0) for both eyes.

Then he stopped wearing glasses at all (from March 2018). In Jan 2020 his pre is still same as march 2018 Sphere (-2.0) and Cyl (-2.0) for both eyes.

I was told by one of the doctor that if he wears the glasses then an average his pre will go up .5/year BUT if he don't wear glasses his pre will go up .25/year. So by putting glasses his eye sight will get worst compared to without glasses...why? Doctor mentioned he has lazy eyes.

My point is what if he don't wear glasses at all...what is the drawback? He is without glasses from 9 months and pre is same but with glasses pre goes up. OR can he just wear glasses when he needs it? Instead full time. Your opinion is must appreciated

Answer

Thanks for your Question

Refractive power will keep changing and usually it will stabilize at age 18-20 years.

Your son should always wear his eyeglass otherwise he will develop lazy eye or amblyopia ( which you said he has it already) and he will complain of headache, blurry vision and eye pain.
