Iris Nevus is a benign brown pigmented area over the iris which can be either flat or slightly elevated area. It represents proliferation of melanocyte cells in the stromal layer of the iris.

It can be either a localized small nevus which can be single or multiple or can be a diffuse iris nevus all over the iris in a syndrome called Iris Nevus Syndrome (Cogan- Reese Syndrome).

It can disturb the surface of the iris and the pupil margin and cause ectropion uvea.

 

 

How to differentiate Iris Nevus from Iris Melanoma ?

 

Iris Nevus has these features:

1- Size, less than 3 mm in diameter.

2- Thickness, less than I mm.

3- Absence of surface vascularity.

4- Absence of Cataract.

5- Absence of secondary glaucoma.

6- No signs of growth. Serial of nevus photographs to document any signs of growth.

 

Treatment of Iris Nevus

 

There is no treatment for iris Nevus. It requires regular follow up visits to documents any signs of growth and malignant transformation.
