Ophthalmology Terminology I​



Incontinentia Pigmenti. X linked disease that affects female.It has dermatological, neurological,dental and ophthalmological features.

Indocyanine Green Angiography.

Infective Keratitis. Inflammation of the cornea due to infective agents such as bacteria, virus or fungus.

Inferior Oblique Overaction.

Inferior Oblique Palsy.

Intermediate Uveitis. Inflammation which starts in the vitreous Humor.

Internuclear Ophthalmoplegia. A clinical condition that results from lesions to Medial longitudinal fasciculus(MLF) in the brain. It is characterized by straight eye in primary position, limitation of adduction of the ipsilateral eye and ataxic nystagmus of the contralateral eye in abduction.



Interstitial Keratitis. Inflammation of the middle layer of the cornea which is called stroma. The epithelial and the endothelial layers are intact. There are many causes of it and the most common is Syphilis.

Intracapsular Cataract Extraction. Old version of cataract surgery in which the lens is removed completely with the capsule.

Intraocular Foreign Body. Foreign body inside the eye after penetrated trauma.

Intraocular Gas. Special gases that are used during retinal detachment surgeries to push the retina back to its place.

Intraocular Lens Implant. Special designed lenses that are implanted inside the eye during cataract surgery to replace the natural crystalline lens.

Intraocular Pressure. The pressure of aqueous humor inside the eye. The normal range between 10-21mmHg.

Iridocorneal Dysgenesis.



Iridocorneal Endothelial Syndrome. It is characterized by abnormal endothelial cells that migrate over the angle and the iris causing glaucoma and iris atrophy.

Iridocyclitis. Irido-cyclitis means inflammation of both iris and ciliary body. There are many causes of it and one of these causes is herpes eye infection.

Iris Atrophy.

Iris Heterochromia. It is the difference in the coloration between both iris. It is either hyochromia in which the affected iris is lighter in color than the normal one or hyperchromia in which the affected iris is darker in color than the normal one.

Iris Nevus.A benign brown pigmented area over the iris which can be either flat or slightly elevated area. It represents proliferation of melanocyte cells in the stromal layer of the iris

Iris Tumor.

Ischemic Optic Neuropathy. Abnormalities in optic nerve functions due to decrease in the blood supply to the optic nerve.

Ishihara Plate.
