At the recent 2012 ESCRS (Congress of European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons), that was held in Milan, Italy, Bausch&Lomb introduced an innovative intraocular lens (IOL) for the correction of astigmatism. It’s the company’s first hydrophobic acrylic Intraocular Lens for astigmatism. The announcement signified a major advancement in the correction of astigmatism using IOL technology.

envista, The new development in intraocular lens by Bausch &Lomb has multiple benefits. One of these benefits is reducing the risk of posterior capsular opacification (PCO), which is a common problem that occurs in about 25% of patients who undergo cataract surgery. During cataract surgery, a small opening in the anterior portion of the lens capsule is made so that the cataract can be removed. The posterior portion of the capsule should remain intact and clear.

However, in a quarter of the patients that undergo cataract surgery, the portion of the lens capsule that is left in place becomes clouded causing PCO. It is believed that Bausch&Lomb’s new IOL will prevent this problem.

Studies have shown that previous generations of plate haptic toric intraocular lenses were not stable when implanted inside the bag and the rotation stability was poor leading to unpredictable astigmatism and blurred vision. The new envista toric IOL created by Bausch&Lomb include a modified-C haptic, single-piece design that dramatically improves rotational stability.

Increased rotational stability not only decreases the risk of posterior capsular opacity but the outcome for the eyesight of patients who had cataract surgery is far more predictable. Contrast sensitivity is also improved and spherical aberration is reduced with the use of this new acrylic toric intraocular lenses.

Ophthalmologist Luis Cadarso of the Clinica Cadarso in Pontevedra, Spain said, “The rotational stability of a toric IOL is very critical in providing the best possible visual outcome for a patient.

If the lens rotates, a patient's vision will become suboptimal. This new enVista Toric intraocular lens is very stable. It provides better and more consistent vision for astigmatic patients.

Previously used hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses often led to the development of glistening, which were liquid-filled microvacuoles that form in the intraocular lenses. Glistening can result in reduced visual acuity post-surgery. Studies have shown a complete lack of glistening development in Bausch & Lomb’s hydrophobic acrylic toric Intraocular Lens.

envista, new toric IOL offers advantages to both patients of cataract surgery and to the surgeons offering cataract surgery. Patients can experience a better outcome from cataract surgery, and surgeons will be able to offer their patients a wider range of IOL options.
