A New Laser Lens Fragmentation Method that Does Not Require Hydrodissection



There is a new laser cataract fragmentation method now available that reduces the risk of surgical trauma. This minimally invasive technique does not require hydrodissection, which was the traditional form of laser lens surgery that involved injections of fluid into the capsule of the eye lens in order to free the cataract lens from its attachments.This traditional form of treatment was more invasive, required more manipulation of the eye, and was, therefore, more risky.

The new form of laser cataract fragmentation requires less fluid and less manipulation of the eye, which results in fewer safety risks for the patient. Fewer instruments are required and manipulation of the eye is minimal, thus reducing the risk of postoperative complications. The gentler form of surgery reduces such complications as endothelial cell loss and corneal edema.

By using a femtosecond laser during surgery, cataract eye surgery is more effective and much safer. Researchers from the University of Miami and the Oregon Health and Sciences University performed a study that included 29 patients with cataracts.

This study found that, by pre-treating the condition with a femtosecond laser, less energy from an ultrasound was required in order to soften the cataracts. The femtosecond laser allows for a much simpler procedure and for greater precision to treat cataracts more effectively.



The study also found that 63 of the patients who received standard cataract surgery experienced a loss of 1-7 percent endothelial cells. In contrast, 225 eyes of patients who underwent the procedure using a femtosecond laser did not experience any loss of endothelial cells.

The conclusion of the study is that the laser lens fragmentation method using a femtosecond laser lens helped to protect the endothelial cells during surgery. The end result is a greater percentage of success in restoring improved vision and fewer post cataract surgery complications.
