Question

Hi there.

I went surfing yesterday and it felt as though I had a grain of sand in my eye. Today, it still feels as though there is one, but I cannot see anything, and I am not able to flush it out with water or saline solution.

Could this just be because my cornea is slightly scratched? If so, what can I do - will time heal it?

Also, just for extra info, this may not be related to the eye issue, but I woke up this morning with a blocked ear, which is slightly sore to touch. Is this from an eye infection perhaps? Or just from the sea water that may have been in my ear for too long?

Thank you.

Answer

Thanks for your question

Well this can be due to one of three things

1- Dryness can cause burning sensation with foreign body sensation and can be treated with over the counter lubricant eye drops

2- Viral conjunctivitis can cause foreign body sensation with redness and tearing and can be followed by sore throat, blocked ear and other symptoms of upper respiratory infection. It can be treated with steroid plus antibiotics eye drops.

3- You have small scratch in your eye and it should be go by its own but you can use lubrication to smoothed the surface of your cornea and decrease Foreign body sensation.

Blocked ear can be unrelated to your eye condition.

I recommend that you use lubricant eye drops every 2 hours and in case no improvement within 24 hours or there is pain and redness , you should visit your eye doctor
