Question

Hi,

My mother-in-law (whose details I have entered above) was diagnosed today as having Myopic Macular Degeneration in the right eye and she also shows early signs of cataract.

She has been prescribed Renolen drops twice a day and Oxy eye capsules once a day for 6 months following which she needs to get another examination.

Please give us more information on this situation and what we can do to delay/arrest it. Duration : She has been suffering from the issue for over one year.

The central vision in her right eye is blurred and she sees a bluish-white light but her peripheral vision works fine.

Thanks for your Question

There are two types of Myopic Macular Degeneration. The first one with Retinal Pigment Epithelial atrophy and the second one with formation of abnormal blood vessels under the macular area.

This abnormal blood vessels are called CNV (Choroidal Neovascularization). Both of them cause reduction in central vision with preservation of peripheral vision. The first type has no treatment other than using vitamins for eyes such as AREDS formula.

This formula won't provide cure from the disease, it can help to stop the progression. The second type with the formation of abnormal blood vessels can be treated with intraocular injections of Anti-VEGF.

Vision can be improved dramatically after the injection but the duration of action of these injection won't last more than few months in most of the cases and many cases required more than one session.

CNV can cause acute and severe loss of central vision while the first type causes gradual reduction of central vision. Fluorescein angiography is used to differentiate between these two types.
