Answer

Thanks for your Question

Bionic eye can be implanted in patients with diseases with macular degeneration such as retinitis pigmentosa. One part of the bionic eye is implanted under the macular area.

This part generates electrical impulses in certain pattern that are transmitted through the intact fibers of optic nerve to the brain. In diseases with macular degeneration, the problem is in the macular area and fibers of the optic nerve are intact.

In patients with glaucoma, the problem presents in the fibers of the optic nerve which are atrophied due to high intraocular pressure while the macular area is intact.

Electrical impulses that are generated from this are can't be transmitted through damaged optic nerve and due to this reason bionic eyes won't work for patients with glaucoma.
