Question

Hi,

I have a 15 y.o. male who suffered an injury of sorts this afternoon stretching before football practice. They were doing warm up exercises on hands and knees, forehead on ground rolling side to side to loosen neck when he felt sharp pain he describes as a thousand bees stinging him to the interior of the right eyeball. (towards the nose) He describes his pain at the time as a strong 10. He says he is tolerating it consistently at a 5 now.

He was not hit prior to injury. Was hurting to the point of crying out and tears. Was being attended by the nurse who had no clue what it could be unless he might have "sprained his eye muscle", although she had never heard of such a thing, assumes it's possible.

I have patched the eye and he has held a cold pak on it for a period of time following injury. We are currently going on 5 hours since injury.
Should I take him to dr.? Is there really anything they can do if it's a sprain?

Thanks

Answer

Thanks for your question

There have been some cases reported as sprain of eye muscles. Still the main cause is unknown but most likely forcefully and suddenly movement of the eye in certain people can cause that.

In case there is no abnormal eye position after the eye sprain, there is no treatments other than pain killer pills and observation.
