Myopia 5.5 D for both eyes

Question

Hi,

I am a moderate /severe myope (-5.5 in both eyes).

I participate in boxing classes on a recreational level which is mainly technical drills and light sparring. I know that myopes are at greater risk of retinal detachment but could somebody quantify this risk in terms of combat sport participation of .

I would like to carry out heavier sparring or competitions?

Thanks

Answer

Thanks for your Question

Exercises that involve direct eye trauma or head trauma are advised to be avoided for highly myopic patient. In general , almost any form of exercise can be consider safe from an ophthalmic perspective as long as there is proper eye protection.

You can do full retinal examination and if there any weak area in the peripheral retina you can do laser to seal these areas.
