Hi,
My brother (age 47) was recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. His eye doctor told him that he has to wait 6 weeks until his blood sugar is regulated before she can prescribe glasses.
He is having a very difficult time with his vision. We have gotten him 10 different pairs of reader glasses ranging from 1.0 to 3.25 and he is switching them as to which works best on a given day.
Is there anything we can do to help him through this time? - he is just miserable with not being able to see well and also it is affecting his work as he needs to see.
The eye doctor told him that he does not have eye disease from the diabetes but that she cannot prescribe glasses until his blood sugar stays constant.

With Diabetes Mellitus, the natural crystalline lens inside the eye is swelled because glucose enters inside the lens and it pulls water with it.
The refraction power of the eye with Swelled lens is different from the refractive power with natural non-swelled lens in which the refractive power is more myopic (Nearsightedness) with swelled lens.
With normalization of blood sugar, the swelled lens needs around 1-2 months to get back to its normal size and so do the refraction power of the eye.
