Fuchs dystrophy, undetected before a combined (phaco/iol) cataracts surgery

Do you suffer from any diseases in the body?

Hi,

When an 81 yr old trying to renew her driver’s license is told by DMV that her vision will not pass and that she should have the eye exam doctor fill out dmv required form, once vision problem is addressed.

This patient then had an eye exam with eye specialist, surgeon, at which point both eyes were diagnosed with advanced cataracts and the right eye would be the first eye for surgery.

The eye exam results read as follows: cornea, guttata 3-4+ with visual acuities - unaided 20/60 and 20/70 with glasses.

My question is would/should a doctor at that point choose to:

A. run additional test to diagnosis any existing cornea disease before cataracts surgery is performed?

or

B. schedule a routine cataracts surgery in 10 days without any further testing?

your eye doctor should run specular microscopy test for corneal endothelial counts. Below normal count is risky for cataract extraction surgery. corneal guttata is a sign of Fuchs corneal Dystrophy.
