Question

Hi,

I am wearing a reading glass 150/175, a 51 year old female. For the past 3 days, I have noticed that my right eye is seeing a flying insect as big as a mosquito. I have checked my eyes and cannot see a foreign object or anything in it.

May I ask what's wrong with my right eye?

I have no previous eye defect or treatment.

Your reply is highly anticipated.

Thank you!!

Thanks for your Question

The thing that you described is called Eye Floaters. The most common cause of it in old age is Vitreous syneresis or vitreous liquefaction which is a normal aging process of the vitreous body.

It is a good thing that you had an eye examination once you noticed it because other pathological diseases can also cause it.

With time, your brain will start to ignore their presence by adaptation.

I always advise my patients to have annual eye examination and also to seek medical attention as soon as possible if you see flashes of light associated with sudden increase in the numbers of these floaters.
