Child 10 years old +3,5 on both eyes

Question

Hello

I have a 10 year old daughter who has hyperopia (+3,5) from birth but never wants to use glasses.

We have gone to 3 different doctors who all confirm this but they don't agree on if she needs to use glasses on a daily basis or not.

She has problems with reading and writing but claims glasses don't help. Is it a possibility she doesn't need glasses ? Can you have +3,5 and still see well?

Thank you

Thanks for your Question

If your child has a problem with reading and writing, she definitely need to use her eyeglasses. People with hyperopia have mainly problems with reading and near tasks but they can see well for far distance but they might complain of headache and eye pain.

Does she have amblyopia and what is the visual acuity with and without eyeglasses ?

I prefer if she wear the eyeglasses all the time and it might take a while for her to get used to wear them.

Usually a 10 years old girl should have her both eyes dilated with cycloplegic eye drops in order to completely relax the muscles inside the eye which are called ciliary muscles. After that the exact refractive power can be measured. 3-5 Days after this examination, she should go back to have multiple trials with different lenses to know which powers will fit her better for far and near distance.

She doesn't have amblyopia and i’m not sure what her visual acuity is. Last doctor spoke of 70% sight for near and 90% far from her.

She had that eye drops and came back couple of days later. Doctor wants her to get glasses with strength +2,50D.

Thank you do much for your help
