Do you suffer from any diseases in the body?
No
Do you use any eye drops?
No
Do you wear Contact lenses or Eyeglasses?

I primarily wear eyeglasses, but do have contacts which I wear occasionally. My prescription is -3.25 in the right eye and -4.5 in the left.

Question

Hi,

I have worn glasses since fifth grade. Every two to three years since then, my vision has deteriorated noticeably enough that I needed to get a stronger prescription. Why does this occur in a young person?

All the articles I have read suggest that most people should not need to worry about worsening eyesight until around age forty. If I were to get vision correction surgery, would my vision continue to worsen afterward?

My intuition says that this is probably a natural inherited trait since my entire family needs glasses, but I'm curious if we know why it occurs.

Thanks

Firstly, I am so embarrassed to have submitted a verb-free question! Sorry about that.

Secondly, I haven't kept the older prescriptions, unfortunately, but here are the numbers as best I remember.

2019: -3.25 right, -4.5 left
2016: -3.25 right, -4.25 left
2015: Can't recall; about the same
2013: -3.0 right, -3.75 left
2010: About the same as above
2007: -2.75 right, -3.25 left
2005: -2.5 right, -3.0 left (not sure about the left, just know it was worse than the right)

I can't see significant changes in refractive power from 2005 till now. Usually refractive power stabilize after age of 18 years but sometimes it can be extended to 25-30 years of age.

0.50 D changes in spherical refractive power per year is insignificant.

The most common cause of changes in refractive power is over-correction by an optometrist, so to find the exact power of the eye, cycloplegic eye drop is applied to relax the muscles inside the eye.

Dry eyes also can cause changes in refractive power, so treatment of it can be very helpful.

You have to be sure that you don't have keratoconus which can cause changes in both, spherical (Myopia) and cylinder power (astigmatism) of the eye.

Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
